Carrie Fisher Honored with Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame on Star Wars Day

On May 4, 2023, fans of the Star Wars franchise celebrated Star Wars Day, a day that has become synonymous with the iconic space saga. But this year's celebration was particularly poignant, as it marked the unveiling of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the late Carrie Fisher, who played the iconic character of Princess Leia Organa in the original and sequel trilogies.

The ceremony, held in Hollywood, was attended by family, friends, and fans of Fisher. Her daughter Billie Lourd, who played a role alongside her mother in the final Skywalker saga films, accepted the honor in her mother's absence. Lourd wore a gown featuring Leia in her most iconic look, with two space buns from Star Wars: A New Hope, and glittery makeup that paid homage to Fisher's penchant for tossing glitter at fans during convention meet-and-greets.

Lourd shared her memories of attending a Star Wars convention as a child and discovering the deep affection fans had for her mother and her character. She also spoke about her mother's enduring legacy, which included acclaimed work as a writer and advocate for mental health.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise and unveiled his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018, spoke about Fisher's charm, humor, wisdom, and frankness. He called May 4 "Carrie Frances Fisher Day."

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, also attended the ceremony.

Fisher's passing more than six and a half years ago touched off Lourd's own adoration for her mother's work. Lourd called herself an "obsessive Star Wars fan" and spoke about how people's love for Leia continues to get passed on from generation to generation.

In a final tribute to her mother, Lourd knelt before Fisher's star and tossed some of her mother's glitter into the air, saying, "My mom was glitter. She left a mark of her sparkle on everyone she met."

Carrie Fisher's star now joins more than 2,000 stars lining the streets around downtown Hollywood, including stars for her parents Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. Her legacy as a talented actress, writer, and mental health advocate will continue to inspire fans for generations to come.
