Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review

Ponniyin Selvan: 2 is the second installment of Mani Ratnam's epic film based on the Tamil classic of the same name by Kalki. The sequel answers many questions that arose from the previous film's climax, including what happened to Arunmozhi Varman and the Chola Kingdom's succession battle. It takes liberal creative liberties in presenting the story cinematically, but it still captures the story's many twists and turns.

The film opens with the romance of Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) and Nandini (Aishwarya Rai), which is the root of much confusion in the Chola Kingdom. Arunmozhi Varman is still alive but suffering from an illness. Can he reclaim his position as the successor to the throne? Will Aditha Karikalan meet Nandini, and what will transpire of that? And what about Vandhiyathevan (Karthi), through whom the main characters were introduced?

Although the film lacks the zing of the first installment, it offers more depth to the characters. The director has always been an expert at showcasing two different character sequences packaged as one, and he employs a similar technique during a death sequence, where there is silence all around the body while a slow-motion fight happens elsewhere. The film features powerful performances from the cast, including Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, Kishore, Vikram Prabhu, and Rahman, who provide a rousing score that mixes soft musical cues and powerful vocals and percussion.

However, some scenes drag on more than they should, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's character could have been given more heft in the end. The Karthi-Trisha romance is more understated and subtle, ending with an apt top-angle shot. Despite the war sequences in the end, it is the interpersonal dynamics and drama between the main characters that form the core of the film.

Overall, Ponniyin Selvan: 2 is an amazing spectacle that captures the story's many twists and turns while providing more depth to the characters. The performances are powerful, and the score is rousing. Although some scenes drag on, the interpersonal dynamics and drama between the main characters make the film a must-see.
